I’m having you people asking me quite often why I don’t show, in my street photos, the faces of my subjects. The answer is quite simple.
The truth is that I’d very much like to. The problem is that I live in Italy, and here we have a very strict privacy law according to which you cannot publish – no, not even on a blog – pictures of other people unless they are either:
- unrecognizable (hence: no faces or faces in silhouette)
- willing to sign a model release
Given street photography is just a past time for me and not my primary genre – landscape is – I honestly don’t care going around with a bunch of model releases ready to be signed if I’m just out for groceries and I happen to stumble on an image I like. Hence I chose “option a”.
Sure, I could do what others do and simply ignore the law, especially given its idiotic nature. But then I’d risk being sued for damages, and if probably just in theory even jail time… So: definitely not a good idea!
On a different note, the project is “officially” closing to an end. That said, shooting every day has become so ingrained in my routine that I don’t even have to consciously think about it. So I’ll keep doing it, project or no project.
